Original Handmade Rustic Chairs

The tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the Eyes of others only a Green thing that stands in the way. Some see Nature all ridicule and deformity, and by these I shall not regulate my proportions; and some scarce see Nature at all. But to the Eyes of the Man of Imagination, Nature is Imagination itself. (William Blake)

Maple Chair with upholstered seat.  (Sold)

This Maple was hand peeled in the Spring while the sap was running. When you catch it just right - it peels with your fingers.  I love the smoothness and feel of hand peeled maple and its fun to work with. This chair could be used for many different purposes. It is quite functional but it also has a unique "look" to it. It pleases my eye and could just be focal point where ever it was placed.

Cedar Chair with Mulberry Arms & Weaved Jute Seat (Sold)

This chair was one of my earlier ones. It is mostly cedar with the exception of the Mulberry arms that were pruned from a tree in our yard. The cedar slabwood back was a nice accent, I left the saw marks on the face. It was also a very comfortable chair, as I had taken it on several fishing trips and used it for my campfire chair. It was primarily screwed and nailed together and made before I bought my first tenon cutter.

Cedar & Maple Chair (Sold)

This is another of my earlier chairs, but also a very good "sitting" chair. It has a carved cedar back and cedar slab arms. The roll of the seat and the round slats doesn't look all that comfortable but it was. There are a combination of mortise & tenon joints as well as screwed and nailed attachments.

Maple Chair with Aged Barnwood Seat

Item # MBWBB  $ 175.00

This chair sits very well for me. I call it a Big Boy Chair, as it fits a large man.  Its made from Maple that was hand peeled in the woods - and I left a pile of these saplings in the woods to dry naturally the first 6 months. This was an experiment and it gave the wood a natural rustic apperance with a natural speckling. After a light sanding it had the look I was after. The seat is from Red Oak Barnwood, that my friend Richard Dunlap gave me. He estimated the wood to have been on the barn for over 50 years. It adds a lot of character to the chair is is very sturdy.

Maple Chair with Cedar Seat

Item # MCCS-GV   $ 175.00

This is another chair that sits good for me. I guess I tend to sit in them as I build.  Sometimes I have my wife, Jackie, model them as I build as well. Most of the structure is Maple with the bark left on. Some of the rungs are hand peeled and aged. The cedar seat is about 2" thick and cut from a single plank. The accent piece at the top is (I believe) grapevine driftwood, that we found on a float trip on the Big Piney River. The accent pieces, lower front are hickory.

Maple Chair with Barnwood Slat Seat

Item # MCBWSS  $ 150.00

SOLD

This was a simple design with a comfortable sit. Its made of Maple with the bark on and has barnwood slats for the seat. It was a sturdy chair. You may notice the legs in front have a little bend to them at the bases. This is from the Maple saplings that I have been harvesting grow out of rocky ground, so they have to twist from the beginning. I use these bases for front legs sonsistently. I like the way they offer a natural "foot".

Maple Chair with Barnwood Seat

Item # MCBWS wss  $ 150.00

This chair is a nice porch chair or would also be a nice accent piece in a foyer or landing. It is made of hand peeled maple that was allowed to age naturally in the woods. Mortise & Tenon glued joints. Since this photo, I have added a cushion of sheepskin fleece that adds to its rustic appeal and makes for a more pleasent seat.

Cedar Chair with Slat Seat

Item # CCRSS   $ 150.00

SOLD, thanks Joe

This is an all cedar chair with a Maple piece at the very top.  The seat was made from boards from a pallet that caught my eye. I think the wood is cherry, but am not for sure. The arms are from cedar slabwood. Its mostly mortise & tenon glued joints. It sits pretty upright but is comfortable. It has a nice rustic look to it.

Mixed Wood Chair  (Sold)

The structure of this chair was maple with the bark on, plus some hand peeled maple. The seat was from oak pallet wood. It sat rather nicely and had an aged rustic apperance. It had a matching pair of supports for the arms in front (its hard to find two limbs naturally this simular)

Maple Chair with Rawhide Seat

Item # MCRS  $ 175.00

This is an interesting chair that also sits nicely. The rawhide seat was my first attempt, and I am sure I will make many more with different weaves. Rawhide is amazingly strong, fun to work with and has a natural appearance that blends will with "rustic". This chair is mostly Maple with bark on. The back is cedar. The arms were cut then split from a piece of pallet wood that looked interesting to me. The glued joints are mortise & tenon.

Maple Chair with Rafia Seat (Sold)

This is another of my "Big Boy" Chairs that I made pretty much for myself. It sat great for me. The seat was made  of weaved rafia, which at the time I wondered how durable or strong it would be. This chair sat on my porch for about 3 years and the seat held up very well. I eventually varnished the seat material and will probably make more like this. The wood was hand peeled maple plus some maple with bark on. The arms were hand split  for a matched pair.

Cedar Barstool

Item # CBS  $ 185.00

This was one of my earlier chairs. I have taken it with me to many trade shows. Its nice to sit and visit with people eye to eye.  It is mostly cedar with one maple rung in front, and the backrest is a naturally curved peice of oak. Its hard to find a piece that has this much curve to it. It is constructed with glued mortise & tenon joints.

Cedar and Maple Childs Chair

This one is NOT FOR SALE !  Betsy would kill me if I sold it.

Pictured (left) is our 8 year old  (going on 16) Betsy.

At present, I don't promote commissions, however I do consider them based on limitations and time availability.
