"Sunset III"  Oil   Painting  (Sold)

24" X 18" Original Oil on Canvas

Sunsets have intriqued me for as long as I can remember.  Skys are my favorite part of a painting - Its normally the first part an artist does, working from the most distant forward, which is top down.  If you are too busy to pause to watch an interesting sunset, you are most likely too busy. I took an art marketing course once in Dayton Ohio. The instructor emphasized the point that you should never paint Old Barns, Wolves, or Sunsets........because every body painted those things and people were tired of them.   Well, I have sold a lot of sunsets.......maybe people never tire of such a relaxing scene.

"High Country Trails"  Oil Painting   $ 1000.00

24" X 18" Original Oil on Canvas

Giclee Prints available on canvas or paper - call for prices.

This work was inspired from one of my regular elk hunting areas in Colorado. Although I did not normally hunt with horses, I would on occassion go back to get them when there was meat to be packed out.  Elk hunting  and horsebacking in the high country is invigorating.

"Stepping Stones" Oil Painting    $ 1000.00

18" X 24" Original Oil on Canvas

Giclee Prints are available on both canvas  & paper - call for prices

Ozark Streams are a regular haunt for me. They are mostly spring fed clear water streams with lots of wildlife activity in and around them - and lots and lots of rocks. Early spring and early fall are my favorite times as the colors are so crisp and vibrant.

"Who Me ? " Oil Painting  (Sold)

11" X 14" Original Oil on Clayboard

This painting never made it out of the studio. Some fiends stopped by one day (before it was dry, I think) and the wife walked straight to it and said: I have to have this. I think we all know this Who Me Look.

"Winter Treats"  Oil Painting   $ 250.00

9" X 12" Original Oil on Canvas

I like feeding the birds in winter. My yard must look bird friendly. One year I had lots of Red Breasted Woodpeckers that would come in regularly and work on the ear corn, so I decided to paint one.  The bird portion came together nicely but the ear of corn took me forever. I never realized how many shades and shadows a corn cob or corn kernnal has in it. This little painting hangs in our home and normally humbles me when I study it.

"Maintenance" Oil Painting  (Sold)

16" X 20"  Original Oil on Canvas

My bud, Richard, modeled for me on this one on one of those perfect fall afternoons. We took lots of research photos and I painted this off of a photo after a modeling session. I learn with each painting. Painting the underside of a hoof, upside down is not a natural act, believe me !

"Christ on the Cross"  Oil Painting

60" X 60"  Original Oil on Belgium Linen

(This work has been placed on 11-26-2006 in the Old Union Christian Union Church, near Lawson Missouri, in honor of Gary's parents, Marvin & Lucille Duncan who pastored and ministered there from 1963 to 1985.)

(Photo of "Christ on the Cross" painting, during the presentation)

This painting very much humbled me. I grew up a "preacher's kid", and after many years of painting I realized that I had not done many religious paintings. I rolled it around in my mind over the years about painting Christ on the Cross - I guess I had to build myself up to it. There have been many magnificent such paintings rendered by many famous  history book artists. I didn't know if I was capable of depicting this scene adequately. Eventually, I built the canvas and decided to brave it. I actually painted this just a few weeks before Mel Gibsons movie, "The Passion of Christ" was released. I am now glad that I painted this before seeing the movie.

I haven't told many people this, but here it is to the world:  I am normally a fast painter, but this one blew me away.  I must have had someone guiding my brush strokes. This is a large work measuring 5 foot square.........that's a lot of canvas to cover. Well, to make this brief.......this painting was done in two 4 hour sittings for a total of 8 hours. If you paint, you should find this amazing. I did. My wish from the beginning was to do this with large bold brush strokes with large brushes and unmolested color. After the second sitting - I stood back to view it from a distance and couldn't see anything that I needed to - or wanted to change or rework. I called it finished. Very seldom does a piece of art bring a tear to the artist's eye, but this one did to me. I was humbled, and it made me realize - "what a small speck  I am on this earth"

Pictured above are Gary's parents Marvin & Lucille Duncan, Top row left to right are Gary and his two brothers, Mike Duncan and Kenny Duncan.  The Painting was presented at a Celebration on 11-26-2006 honoring Gary's parents for 22+ years of service to the Old Union Christian Union Church in Lawson, Missouri.  During the presentation with over 250 people in attendance - the lights were turned out, three candles lit and the music of "I Can Only Imagine" was played. Gary recalls: In the low glimmering candle light there were many camera flashes going off- giving illusions of lightning flashing and illuminating Christ on the Cross. This was an emotional moment for me........but when the lightning was flashing and tears welling my eyes, I was again humbled, as the micro second in time of this painting penetrated my mind - as Jesus said - It is Finished - Fullfilling God's promise to us.  John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son. For whosoever believeth in him, shall not perish, but have everlasting life.

I had always hoped that this painting would be placed in an appropriate place. Praise the Lord, I believe it was pre-destined by the true creator to be placed here. The church  building has been greatly expanded over the years; however this alcove pictured above was the former pulpit area where my father preached from during the 1960's and 70's.  I have never painted a square painting before or after this work.........the painting measures 60" X 60"........the recess in which it now hangs is 62" X 62" - a perfect fit.  The colors of the painting also compliment the walls and stained glass beside it. "To God be the Glory - Great Things He has Done"
